Plasmepsin II

Definition:

EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.23 Aspartic endopeptidases > 3.4.23.39 plasmepsin II
Plasmepsin II is a ~37-kDa aspartic endopeptidase from Plasmodium, 73% identical in sequence to plasmepsin I, belonging to peptidase family A1 and inhibited by pepstatin; it was formerly in EC 3.4.23.6. It hydrolyzes bonds linking hydrophobic residues in hemoglobin or globin, and cleaves small-molecule substrates such as Ala-Leu-Glu-Arg-Thr-Phe-/-Phe(NO2)-Ser-Phe-Pro-Thr. In the parasite food vacuole it completes hemoglobin breakdown. It features a pepsin-like aspartic-protease fold.
