Plasmepsin V is a Plasmodium aspartic endopeptidase that cleaves hemoglobin. In contrast to food-vacuole plasmepsins, detergent-solubilized plasmepsin V does not bind the aspartic-protease inhibitor pepstatin. In the parasite it is ER-resident and processes the PEXEL motif of exported proteins. It features an atypical aspartic-protease fold.
