Plasminogen activator Pla is an aspartic protease in peptidase family A26 from the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis. It converts human Glu-plasminogen to plasmin by cleaving the Arg560-/-Val bond also hydrolyzed by mammalian u-PA and t-PA, and additionally cleaves arginyl bonds in other proteins. In the pathogen it dissolves host fibrin and promotes tissue invasion and dissemination. It features an outer-membrane aspartic-protease fold.
