Polo kinase is the mitotic Ser/Thr kinase that associates with the spindle pole during mitosis. Human Plk1 does not phosphorylate histone H1, enolase or phosvitin but phosphorylates myelin basic protein and MAP-2 (less than casein), and organizes spindle dynamics, chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
