Prephenate dehydratase
Definition:
EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.2 Carbon-oxygen lyases > 4.2.1 Hydro-lyases > 4.2.1.51 prephenate dehydratase
Prephenate dehydratase is a bifunctional shikimate-pathway enzyme; in enteric bacteria it also possesses chorismate mutase (EC 5.4.99.5) activity, converting chorismate into prephenate. It then dehydrates and decarboxylates prephenate into phenylpyruvate, water and CO2, the committed step toward phenylalanine. It is feedback-inhibited by phenylalanine. It is found in Bacteria, Eukaryota and Archaea. Structurally it is a chorismate-mutase/prephenate-dehydratase bifunctional enzyme.
