Propionate kinase is the Mg2+-requiring short-chain carboxylate kinase. It phosphorylates propanoate (and acetate more slowly), releasing ADP and propanoyl phosphate (or acetyl phosphate), participating in anaerobic L-threonine degradation; together with acetate kinase EC 2.7.2.1 it drives propanoate production. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
