Proprotein convertase 2
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.94 proprotein convertase 2
Proprotein convertase 2 (prohormone convertase 2) is a Ca2+-dependent subtilisin-like convertase in family S8, maximally active at pH ~5.5 and present in the regulated secretory pathway of neuroendocrine cells, acting cooperatively with PC1; its specificity is broader than PC1, substrates including pro-opiomelanocortin, proenkephalin, prodynorphin, proglucagon, proinsulin and pro-LH-RH (but not prorenin or prosomatostatin), with prodynorphin processing unusually at a P2-Thr bond; it releases protein hormones and neuropeptides from precursors generally by hydrolysis of Lys-Arg bonds. By maturing neuropeptide precursors it generates active peptide hormones. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
