Prostasin is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored trypsin-like serine protease found in viruses and cellular organisms, exerting endoprotease and trypsin-like activity on cell-surface and extracellular protein substrates. It is shed from the membrane after activation and participates in epithelial sodium channel regulation, proteolytic processing and barrier function. In organisms it contributes to extracellular matrix remodeling and surface protein activation. It features a trypsin-like catalytic domain linked to a C-terminal GPI anchor and an N-terminal regulatory domain.
