Rhodopsin kinase (GRK1) is the G-protein-dependent receptor kinase that desensitizes activated visual pigments. It requires G-protein transducin for activation, phosphorylates the bleached/activated rhodopsin on multiple C-terminal serines, releasing ADP and phosphorhodopsin; it also acts more slowly on the beta-adrenergic receptor, but not on casein, histones or phosphvitin, and is inhibited by Zn2+ and digitonin. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms (cf. EC 2.7.11.15/16).
