2-Iminobutanoate/2-iminopropanoate deaminase is a ubiquitous deaminase found in all examined species and tissues, accelerating hydrolysis of imine intermediates from PLP-dependent dehydratases such as EC 4.3.1.19 threonine ammonia-lyase and EC 4.3.1.17 L-serine ammonia-lyase; the spontaneous reactions are accelerated to minimize cellular damage from reactive imines. It hydrolyzes 2-iminobutanoate into 2-oxobutanoate and ammonia, and 2-iminopropanoate into pyruvate and ammonia. In cells it clears toxic imines. It features a deaminase fold.
