Mitochondrial intermediate peptidase is a zinc metalloendopeptidase in peptidase family M3 (thimet oligopeptidase family), a homologue of thimet oligopeptidase. Its natural substrates are precursor proteins already processed by mitochondrial processing peptidase, from which it releases an N-terminal octapeptide as the second stage of mitochondrial import. In the mitochondrial matrix it trims N-terminal targeting peptides. It features an M3-family zinc catalytic chamber.
