Strictosidine synthase is a Pictet-Spenglerase found in eukaryotes and bacteria that condenses secologanin aldehyde with tryptamine amino to form 3-alpha(S)-strictosidine, the universal precursor of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. It is written in the reverse hydrolytic direction (strictosidine = tryptamine and secologanin). In medicinal plants it builds quinoline and ajmalan alkaloid skeletons. It features a secologanin-tryptamine synthase fold.
