Scutelarin
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.60 Scutelarin
Scutelarin (taipan venom factor X-activator) is an Australian-elapid-venom serine protease in family S1 from the taipan Oxyuranus scutellatus that converts prothrombin to thrombin with specificity similar to factor Xa (EC 3.4.21.6) but, unlike Xa, cleaves its target without factor Va; activity is potentiated by phospholipid and Ca2+ bound through gamma-carboxyglutamic-acid residues, and similar enzymes occur in venoms of other Australian elapids including Pseudonaja textilis textilis, Oxyuranus microlepidotus and Demansia nuchalis affinis; it selectively cleaves Arg-Thr and Arg-Ile in prothrombin to form thrombin and two inactive fragments. By directly activating prothrombin it causes venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy.
