Spermine synthase is a polyamine-biosynthesis aminopropyltransferase. It transfers the 3-aminopropyl group from S-adenosyl 3-(methylsulfanyl)propylamine onto spermidine, releasing S-methyl-5'-thioadenosine and forming spermine. The mammalian enzyme is highly specific for spermidine. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms (cf. EC 2.5.1.16 and EC 2.5.1.23).
