EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.99 spermosin
Spermosin is an ascidian sperm serine protease in family S1 from Halocynthia roretzi, localised in the sperm head and released during sperm activation, with a proline-rich region involved in binding to the vitelline coat of the egg; it hydrolyses arginyl bonds, preferably with Pro at P2. By digesting the egg vitelline coat it enables ascidian fertilisation.
