Sphingomyelin synthase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.8 Transferases for other substituted phosphate groups > 2.7.8.27 sphingomyelin synthase
Sphingomyelin synthase is the central sphingolipid/glycerophospholipid exchange enzyme. It transfers phosphocholine from phosphatidylcholine onto ceramide, releasing sphingomyelin and diacylglycerol, acting in both directions; unlike EC 2.7.8.3 it cannot use CDP-choline. Its activity affects mitogenic and pro-apoptotic signaling. Expected in Eukaryota and Bacteria.
