Sphingosine kinase is the sphingolipid-signaling kinase. It phosphorylates sphingoid long-chain bases — sphingosine, dihydrosphingosine (sphinganine), phytosphingosine, 4-hydroxy-8-sphingenine, 4,8-sphingadienine and threo-dihydrosphingosine — on the 1-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and the corresponding sphingoid base 1-phosphate (e.g. sphingosine 1-phosphate), a bioactive pro-survival and migratory second messenger. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
