Stizolobinate synthase is a Zn2+-requiring dioxygenase found in viruses and cellular organisms. It cleaves L-dopa with O2 to 5-(L-alanin-3-yl)-2-hydroxy-cis,cis-muconate 6-semialdehyde, which then undergoes ring closure and oxidation (NAD(P)+ as acceptor) to stizolobinic acid.
