Strictosidine synthase catalyzes a Pictet-Spengler reaction between the aldehyde of secologanin and the amine of tryptamine (and related tryptamine analogues), yielding 3α(S)-strictosidine, the universal precursor of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. Structurally it is a Pictet-Spengler cyclase.
