Superoxide oxidase is a membrane-bound di-heme enzyme identified in Escherichia coli that detoxifies superoxide in the periplasm. In vivo the reaction runs in the direction shown and produces oxygen; superoxide production was observed only in vitro, when the enzyme was incubated with ubiquinol. Overall, 2 superoxide plus ubiquinol yield O2, ubiquinone and 2 H+.
