Thymidine kinase is the deoxypyrimidine-salvage kinase. It phosphorylates thymidine on the 5'-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and dTMP; deoxyuridine can also act as acceptor and dGTP as donor. The herpes-simplex-virus-induced deoxypyrimidine kinase complex carries this reaction together with EC 2.7.1.114, EC 2.7.1.118 and EC 2.7.4.9. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms and supplies the dTTP pool for DNA synthesis.
