Thymine dioxygenase

Definition:

EC Tree > 1 Oxidoreductases > 1.14 Acting on paired donors, with incorporation or reduction of molecular oxygen > 1.14.11 With 2-oxoglutarate as one donor, and incorporation of one atom of oxygen into each donor > 1.14.11.6 thymine dioxygenase
Thymine dioxygenase is an Fe2+- and ascorbate-dependent 2-oxoglutarate oxygenase found in viruses and cellular organisms; it also acts on 5-hydroxymethyluracil, oxidizing -CH2OH first to -CHO and then to -COOH. With thymine it yields 5-hydroxymethyluracil, releasing succinate and CO2.
