Tricin synthase from rice (ROMT-15/17), barley (HvOMT1) and maize (ZmOMT1) stepwise methylates tricetin to its 3'-mono- and 3',5'-dimethyl ethers (tricin), but unlike the wheat trimethyltransferase does not carry the reaction through to the 3',4',5'-trimethyl ether.
