Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.12 Acting on sulfur-sulfur bonds > 3.12.1 Acting on sulfur-sulfur bonds (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 3.12.1.1 trithionate hydrolase
Trithionate hydrolase is a sulfur-chemolithotrophic enzyme that hydrolyses trithionate into thiosulfate, sulfate and 2 H+. By breaking the S-S bond of the polythionate intermediate it supports bacterial oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds such as thiosulfate in sulfur-oxidising bacteria. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
