Tryptophan synthase
Definition:
EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.2 Carbon-oxygen lyases > 4.2.1 Hydro-lyases > 4.2.1.20 tryptophan synthase
Tryptophan synthase is a pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent alpha2beta2 complex. The alpha subunit cleaves 1-C-(indol-3-yl)glycerol 3-phosphate into indole and D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (formerly EC 4.1.2.8); indole diffuses through an internal tunnel to the beta subunit, where PLP-dependent condensation with L-serine yields L-tryptophan and water. In some organisms the enzyme is part of a multifunctional protein. It is the model channeled enzyme. Structurally it is a TIM-barrel alpha subunit and a PLP fold-II beta subunit.
