N-benzyloxycarbonylglycine hydrolase is a cobalt- or zinc-dependent amidase from Enterococcus faecalis, which also acts more slowly on N-benzyloxycarbonylalanine but not on other amino-acid derivatives or N-benzyloxycarbonyl peptides (cf. EC 3.5.1.64). It hydrolyzes N-benzyloxycarbonylglycine into benzyl alcohol, CO2 and glycine. In bacteria it removes Cbz protecting groups. It requires Co2+ or Zn2+ and features a deprotection amidase fold.
