U-Plasminogen activator (urokinase, uPA) is a urinary/extracellular-m serine protease in family S1 formed from inactive precursor by plasmin or plasma kallikrein, structurally distinct from tPA (EC 3.4.21.68) and not binding fibrin (formerly EC 3.4.21.31 and EC 3.4.99.26); it specifically cleaves the Arg-Val bond in plasminogen to form plasmin. By driving pericellular fibrinolysis and matrix remodelling it supports cell migration and cancer invasion. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
