UmuD protein is an SOS-response autopeptidease that, after RecA-mediated cleavage, enables translesion DNA synthesis; it is involved in UV protection and mutation and essential for induced (SOS) mutagenesis, modifying the DNA-replication machinery to allow bypass synthesis across a damaged template. By self-cleaving it switches on error-prone lesion bypass. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
