Urocanate hydratase is a tightly-NAD+-dependent histidine-catabolic enzyme that hydrates urocanate (trans-urocanate) into 3-(5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-3H-imidazol-4-yl)propanoate and water, the second step of histidine degradation to glutamate. It is found in Bacteria, Eukaryota and Archaea. Structurally it is an imidazolone-propionase-fold urocanase with tightly bound NAD+.
