Venombin AB
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.55 Venombin AB
Venombin AB is a Gaboon-viper (Bitis gabonica) venom thrombin-like serine protease that activates factor XIII and, unlike thrombin (EC 3.4.21.5), is not inhibited by antithrombin III/heparin or hirudin; it selectively cleaves Arg bonds in fibrinogen to form fibrin and release fibrinopeptides A and B. By clotting fibrinogen it disturbs prey haemostasis. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
