EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.B1 vignain
Vignain is a cysteine endopeptidase found in viruses and cellular organisms that hydrolyzes proteins such as azocasein. It preferentially cleaves Asn-/-Xaa bonds in small-molecule substrates such as Boc-Asn-/-OPHNO2. In organisms it contributes to Asn-specific protein processing and turnover. It features a legumain-like asparaginyl cysteine protease fold.
