Xanthine dehydrogenase is a eukaryotic [2Fe-2S]/FAD/molybdenum enzyme that oxidizes xanthine/hypoxanthine (and other purines/aldehydes) with NAD+ to urate; the mammalian enzyme reversibly converts to O2-dependent xanthine oxidase (EC 1.17.3.2) by disulfide rearrangement or proteolysis.
