YopJ protease is a bacterial effector cysteine protease found in viruses and cellular organisms that cleaves reversible post-translational modifications in the form of ubiquitin or a ubiquitin-like protein. It inhibits the host immune response and induces apoptosis by blocking multiple signaling pathways, including the MAPK and NF-kappaB pathways in the infected cell. In the pathogen it is injected into host cells to suppress defense. It features a caspase-like catalytic fold with acetyltransferase and deubiquitinase activity.
