CDKL1

CDKL1, also known as PITALRE, is the founding member of the cyclin-dependent kinase-like (CDKL) branch of the CMGC kinase group. Like its relatives, it pairs an N-terminal CDK-related catalytic domain with a long, poorly conserved C-terminal extension, and it autophosphorylates within the activation segment to gain activity without a cyclin partner. PITALRE was first characterized as a cell-cycle-regulated kinase of proliferating cells, and the protein is detected in the nucleus. Its physiological substrates remain unconfirmed, which distinguishes it from the better-studied CDKL5. Recombinant CDKL1 is useful for probing CDKL-family autophosphorylation chemistry and for screening inhibitors in neurodevelopmental kinase programs.
