Flurochloridone (R-40244) is an orally active herbicide and an inducer of ER stress, apoptosis, and cytotoxicity. Flurochloridone upregulates GRP78 and activates the PERK-eIF2α-ATF4 UPR axis, ATF6, CHOP, Bax, and Bim. Flurochloridone decreases Akt, p-Akt, GSK3β, and p-GSK3β levels, and induces ROS, oxidative stress, γ-glutamyl cycle activation, and GSH accumulation. Flurochloridone inhibits mitochondrial respiration and ATP production while enhancing glycolysis and cell viability inhibition. Flurochloridone inhibits spermatogonial proliferation, spermatocyte meiosis, and sperm mitochondrial membrane potential, and induces Sertoli cell apoptosis and mitochondrial damage. Flurochloridone non-competitively binds phytoene desaturase, blocking phytoene desaturation and carotenoid synthesis, leading to leaf bleaching and phytotoxicity. Flurochloridone can be used for research on male reproductive toxicity, hepatotoxicity, and as a herbicide .

Phytoene desaturase-IN-1 is a potent phytoene desaturase (PDS) inhibitor (Kd: 65.9 μM) through π−π stacking effect with Phe301 residue. Phytoene desaturase-IN-1 shows broad spectrum of postemergence herbicidal activity. Phytoene desaturase-IN-1 induces PDS mRNA reduction, phytoene and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in albino leaves. Phytoene desaturase-IN-1 can be used in the area of agricultural production .

Picolinafen is a pyridine-class herbicide that acts as a phytoene desaturase (PDS) inhibitor. Picolinafen effectively controls broadleaf weeds and disrupts carotenoid biosynthesis. Picolinafen exhibits cytotoxicity to porcine trophectoderm (pTr) and luminal epithelial (pLE) cells. Picolinafen induces (ROS accumulation, calcium depletion, and activates (MAPK and PI3K signaling pathways, leading to decreased cell viability, increased apoptosis, impaired migration, and altered expression of implantation-related genes. Picolinafen has an LD50 value of 2.7 mg/kg in mammals and 7 μg/L in fish. Picolinafen exhibits toxic effects during zebrafish embryogenesis [1][2].

Flurtamone is a herbicide that interferes with carotenoid biosynthesis by inhibiting phytoene desaturase, blocking the conversion of phytoene to ζ-carotene. Flurtamone can cause the accumulation of phytoene, leading to photooxidative destruction of chlorophyll and plant albinism . Flurtamone comprises a pair of chiral enantiomers, R-flurtamone and S-flurtamone, with R-flurtamone exhibiting significantly stronger herbicidal activity against target weeds. Flurtamone is toxic to Selenastrum capricornutum. Flurtamone can control broadleaf weeds and grass weeds as well as various weeds, and can be used in herbicide-related research .

Phytoene desaturase-IN-4 is a phytoene desaturase (PDS) inhibitor with a Kd value of 76 μM against Synechococcus PDS. Phytoene desaturase-IN-4 interacts with PDS via the Arg195 residue, disrupts carotenoid biosynthesis, induces the accumulation of 15-cis-phytoene, and reduces carotenoid and chlorophyll levels. Phytoene desaturase-IN-4 acts as both an inducer and an inhibitor, exhibits herbicidal activity against Portulaca oleracea, and shows higher safety toward non-target organisms. Phytoene desaturase-IN-4 can be used as a herbicide .
