Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of severe inherited blood disorders that cause red blood cells to distort into a sickle shape. These cells can cause blood flow obstruction, leading to severe pain, organ damage, and premature death. β-Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders caused by reduced or absent β-globin synthesis, which in turn leads to anemia. WIZ is widely expressed and plays a role in targeting the G9a/GLP histone methyltransferase to genomic loci to regulate chromatin structure and transcription.
