Ikshusterol (7α-Hydroxysitosterol) is an oxidation product of β-sitosterol that can be generated during thermal oxidation of oils and fats. Ikshusterol exhibits weak cytotoxicity against human tumor cell lines and shows weak anti-inflammatory activity in the TPA-induced mouse ear edema in vivo model. Ikshusterol can be used in cancer-related research.

Ikshusterol can be generated by thermal oxidation of β-sitosterol in pure form and in corn oil, lard, and olive oil matrices^[1].

Anti-cancer

Ikshusterol (compound 6) showed weak cytotoxicity against A549, HCT-15, MES-SA, SK-MEL-2, and SK-OV-3, with IC₅₀ values of 14.55-96.10 μg/mL, and >100 μg/mL against SK-OV-3^[3].
Ikshusterol (compound III) inhibits the proliferation of HL-60 human leukemia cells with an IC₅₀ of 8.4 µM^[4].

In Vivo
