NRERcl has the fluorescent scaffold of Nile Red (HY-D0718). NRERcl can be used for imaging of endoplasmic reticulum lipid order and polarity. NRERcl carries a propyl chloride targeting group that directs it to the endoplasmic reticulum and acts through excited-state charge transfer, enabling emission color changes according to local polarity associated with lipid order. NRERcl can insert into lipid bilayers, showing almost no fluorescence in aqueous environments and greatly enhanced fluorescence after entering membranes. NRERcl can also stain Golgi membranes. The excitation wavelength of NRERcl is 520 nm, and its emission maximum varies with the environment (Ex/Em = 520/584-653 nm) .
